Everything you need to know about Tencel (Lyocell), this ecological material

Tout savoir sur le Tencel (Lyocell), cette matière écologique

What is Tencel? Learn more about this natural material.

Tencel (Lyocell) is an exceptional fabric, which has many qualities. We let you discover that 👇🏼

This innovative material, made in Europe , is ecological and biodegradable.

It is a very soft , breathable, thermoregulating and anti-bacterial fabric (just that!)

Made from natural resources such as eucalyptus or bamboo wood, from eco-certified forests, then transformed into wood pulp and then textile fiber using an industrial process that uses a non-toxic solvent. This is how Tencel or Lyocell is created, in a closed circuit, perfectly respecting the environment. Its manufacture is a real technological gem!

To be more precise, Tencel is manufactured by Lenzing, an Austrian company that stands out for its ecological commitment. The eucalyptus comes from Central European forests certified by the FSC label, guaranteeing responsible management of these natural resources. The latter operate autonomously, without resorting to irrigation or pesticides. Tencel is characterized by its lower use of resources compared to conventional cotton:

  • The production of 1 kg of Tencel requires less than 1000 litres of water, compared to the more than 5000 litres needed to produce 1 kg of cotton.

  • Half an acre of eucalyptus forest produces one ton of lyocell fiber, which is just one-fifth of the area needed to produce cotton.

  • In addition, its manufacturing is more energy efficient because it is extremely fast.

This natural fiber is very smooth and soft, it is often compared to silk. That's why we chose it for our very first garment: the bodysuit ✨

Lighter than cotton, Tencel has a faster moisture absorption capacity and more efficient evacuation than cotton. Tencel clothing is excellent for regulating perspiration, ensuring a dry skin feeling. In addition, like wool or linen, Tencel acts as a thermoregulatory material by adapting to temperature variations.

To be more specific, when temperatures rise, Tencel wicks away heat to allow the skin to breathe. On the other hand, in cooler weather, it captures body heat, diffuses it, and maintains a constant body temperature. These properties make Tencel an ideal material to be worn all year round. Contrary to the common perception that wool is exclusively associated with winter, it is quite possible to wear a T-shirt made of merino wool and Tencel even in summer, thus benefiting from its advantages in terms of breathability and thermal regulation.

In addition, a smooth surface such as that of Tencel does not provide any grip for external agents. Bacteria cannot adhere to Tencel. In the absence of bacteria, there is no development of unpleasant odors that accumulate in the fabric over time. Therefore, Tencel clothing has an anti-odor property.

Breathable, environmentally friendly, this ecological fiber has everything to please ❤️
